How To Create A Beautiful Faux Wood Paint Finish | YouTube Video
Today I’m sharing a little bathroom makeover… because I can’t look at this vanity in its current state any longer! 😆 This is now the third or fourth transformation of the same salvaged dresser turned bathroom vanity. I bought this vintage dresser for $40 over 20 years ago, and it’s a wonderful example of how an old piece of furniture can evolve with your home and personal style over time!
This time, I’m giving it a completely different look by creating a warm, natural-looking wood finish using PAINT! And the best part? No stripping off all that old paint! The finished result looks pretty fancy and technical, but trust me, this faux-wood technique is surprisingly easy, forgiving, and fun!
In today’s tutorial, I’m sharing –
- How to pick the perfect wood tone for your project
- The wood-grain tool(s) I use to get a wood look… even though I haven’t perfected them!
- My favorite paint colors for this technique
- And more…

Bonus, it’s Furniture Fixer Upper Day! If you’re new here, on the fourth Thursday of every month, I join four super-talented friends (Christy – Confessions of a Serial DIYer, Kathy – Petticoat Junktion, Natalie – A Ray of Sunlight, and Gail – My Repurposed Life) to share our before-and-after furniture restyles. I’ve included the links at the bottom of today’s post, and I hope you join me in seeing what they’ve created this month! I always learn something new from these talented ladies.
Here’s my bathroom vanity in its current state. It’s a little beat up. It was painted 3+ years ago, and with all the use it gets on a daily basis, I’m surprised it’s held up this well.
A few months ago, I stripped the bottom drawer, thinking I’d stain the entire vanity. But with this bathroom being so small, stripping the sides would be a real challenge. Plus, as I mentioned, this was a $40 thrifted dresser that was converted into a vanity, so there are plenty of old nail marks and filled hardware holes that would be tricky to hide with stain.
That’s why a faux wood paint finish makes so much more sense!

Faux wood finishes are so fun to try! Love how yours turned out!
They really are and thanks Natalie! XOXO

I love the new look of your old vanity. The faux wood looks fabulous, so much better. Your tips are great!

Thanks so much Gail and I appreciate the pin! Enjoy your day! XOXO
I love your wood-painted vanity! I’ve been too intimidated to try using those woodgrain tools but I may have to give it a try now. Great tutorial and I’m looking forward to the video tutorial.
Hi Nicki and thank you! The wood graining tools are pretty forgiving. You can run them through the glaze, and if you really don’t like what you see (which happens to me all the time 😝) then you can go over it again OR brush/erase it and start fresh. If you have any urge to give it a go, I strongly recommend. It’s a super fun faux finish! XOXO
Hi Denise. Your bathroom vanity cabinet turned out beautifully. I love the warm tones and wood grain. Looks authentic. I’m impressed. On a side note, the warm wood also matches the fluting you did on the inside of your shelves, peeking through in your photos. Your bathroom looks upscale and cosy.
YESSSS – good eye!👁️ I was looking to create exactly that… a mid-tone wood finish to tie everything together! The grain isn’t quite as pronounced IRL, especially with the bathroom lighting, but I love it. So happy this dresser/vanity gets a few more years of use! Enjoy your weekend my friend. XOXO
Wow, that reveal was amazing. You did wonders with that old vanity. Love it, Kathy
Aw, thanks my friend, appreciate it!💙 I’m so glad I refinished something for my home.🏡
I freaking love ❤️ how you don’t give up on piece. I’m a firm believer that the same piece should be updated wherever necessary… meaning when I get sick of it. 😂 The finish is gorgeous and I’m loving the warm richness of the faux wood. You just added another 10 years! 👏🏻 PINNED 📌
Thank YOU!!! It is nice that we can restyle the furniture in our home without having to buy new furniture all the time!😝 And I’m with you Do, I get tired/bored of things as well. It’s just finding the time to update them which can be a challenge sometimes. I’d LOVE to redo my office but I’m afraid to start because I don’t want to leave it half done… like I did this vanity.🤣 Thanks for the PIN and enjoy your weekend. XOXO
Love you “new’ vanity.
It looks so much better now. I’m not a fan of the pretend wood look but you changed my mind!
I really like the two knobs vs the previous handle. Their color matches all of your bath items perfectly. Great job!
Thanks so much, 🤗 and I think it looks so much better now too. I’m happy I took the time to restyle it because the scratched paint and the naked drawer I sanded were driving me crazy.😆
What a great way to get that wood look you want without the hassle of removing the existing paint! It loooks fantastic! And I love the “Guess what’s different” game…I couldn’t figure it out lol! XOXO
Thanks my friend! I’m so happy I updated it. Now I’m thinking I should paint the beadboard and walls. One thing always leads to another, right, hehe. And I love the “Guess whats different game as well, I had SO MUCH fun. And you all were coming up with things I didn’t even see.😆 Just goes to show when you ask AI to keep it EXACTLY AS IS, it might still do it’s own thing.🤣
Fantastic job D, great tips too. I’ve redone wood trims on 2 antique sofas with this method, so I got some practice there, (using the silicone dog hair brush) but I, too, have a bathroom vanity that I want to do this to. Your vanity/sink combo is gorgeous!
awww thank you Tracy!🤗 I’m so happy I finally took the time to update it. And isn’t that silicone dog hair brush fabulous! I used it on my text boards and then decided on the larger grain for the actual piece but it does such a lovely job and so easy. Have a great weekend. XOXO
Oh, that looks so good now! Love the new knobs too. Great job!
Thanks my friend! So much better… I just couldn’t look at it like that anymore, lol.
This turned out gorgeous! Looks so high end now. I love the sink. The hardware you chose is perfect.
Thanks so much Leslie! I’m super pleased with it as well and the hardware was a great find at HD! Have a great weeekend! XOXO
This vanity looks so much nicer – nice job! Would you consider showing the inside of the drawers to show us how much space is lost when using a cabinet as a bathroom sink vanity?
Hi Gwen and thank you! yes, you’ll be able to see how the drawers are configured and the space it required to cut down the top two drawers in this weekends video! 🙂
