Hi friends⦠hope you had a great weekend!Ā Iām so excited because I have something special for you!
Iāve teamed up with Bluestone House⢠to give you a chance to win a VERY generous Chalky Patina Paint Package {say that 5 times quick} worth $150!
First, let me show you how amazing this paint really is!
With Valentineās approaching, I decided to restyle this gal ā a romantic vintage dresser. SheĀ doesnāt look too dreamyĀ in herĀ before state butā¦.
ā¦Iām happy to say her canineĀ mangled limbsĀ and worn finish didnāt deter me from seeing herĀ potential.
This girlāsĀ shapely curved backboard and turned legs screamed feminine. The icing on the cake (and what I really LOVE) isĀ the jewelry box on top.
This jewelry storage is perfect for all the blingyĀ diamonds us ladiesĀ will be receiving on Valentineās Ā Day ā a girl can dream right?Ā {big smile}
She had real potential to be a heart breaker⦠AND SHE IS⦠loooook at her now!
To get this amazing finishĀ I used the Wash and Dry Paint Technique. I think IĀ just made that upĀ ā butĀ I like it! I white-washed (or in this case used Bluestone Houseās⢠āBluestoneā so it could be considered a grey-blue-wash) and then I dry brushed.
Step by step:
- Remove Hardware
- Clean with TSP
- Repair dog chewed damage with Bondo
- Sand entire dresser and remove dust
- Water down Bluestone Paint and use whitewash technique 2x
- Use full strength Bluestone Paint and dry brush 2x
- Sand and distress
- Wax to seal/protect
- Add originalĀ + new glass hardware
- Line drawers with paper
I wonāt get into a full tutorial on grey-washing wood furniture because itās the same technique IĀ shared in my white-wash tutorial.Ā But I always like leaving you with a little something, soĀ here are a few additional tips I can pass along.
Tip#1: Washing furniture with watered down paintĀ can be messy. Personally, I donāt mindĀ if my work-space gets splattered because itās a designated studio. (Iām working on my Jackson PollockĀ look-alike-master piece.) But, if youāre working in your home, itās probably a good idea to protect your floors and surrounding areas. Seeing as I donāt want my hands to look like Jacksonās, I like to wear gloves and use shop towels rather than rags. The shop towels are easy to throw awayĀ once they get saturated ā and itās superĀ easy to tear off a fresh one.
Tip#2:Ā Use painterās tape to cover the back of hardware holesĀ on the inside of theĀ drawer. This way if any paint drips into aĀ hardware hole, the painterās tape catches it and keeps the inside of the drawerĀ spotless.
Tip#3: To dry brush, dip only the TIP of your brush into the paint and remove anyĀ excess paint on a paper towel. With a light touch, gently paintĀ straight long strokes onto your furniture. I like to use a cheap chip-brush for this technique. The bristles of the chip-brush are uneven and this helps create interesting lines.
Tip#4: With the wash and dry paint technique, youāre not looking for aĀ perfect finish. Just the opposite actually. The paint will look uneven and streaky. Keep playing with the grey-wash and dry brushing until you get a look your somewhat happy with. Then, once you sand to expose theĀ wood, it will take on a TOTALLY different appearance!
I love thisĀ finish!Ā This wash and dry technique adds SOĀ much interest! Itās distressed yet sophisticated. All the wood showingĀ through adds warmth to thisĀ dreamy look.

I love this look. I think Iām going to do this. Beautiful piece.
have French provential dining room with 6 chairsāI am 81 and really want to refinish this but canāt invest too much time or money. Have pale gold walls, natural eoof kitchen cabinets red accentsāwhat color would go with that?
I love just about everything you paint! I am a color enthusiast with eclectic taste and you inspire me not to be afraid! lol After all, itās only paint.
For the white-washed look above, just to be clear, you put two light coats of white wash, 2 light dry brush coats. DId you use a sander for the final sanding? Then, of course, wax.
Hi Cara⦠thanks, thatās so sweet of you to say. (hugs!) This piece was hand sanded for the final sanding. š
Denise, You make it all sound so easy. I would love to try the above technique on a vintage dresser I have, but Iām afraid it wouldnāt turn out the same. Can you come to Oregon and give hands on lessons?? HaHaHa.
Iāve never been to Oregon, so sounds fun! š š ;D Kidding aside, you can do it, Kathy!!! Itās just paint. If it doesnāt turn out exactly as youād like, give it a light sanding and start again. š
Denise! Oh my goodness! She is gorgeous! I have a dresser I may try this technique on! Thank you for sharing!
Where did you the hardware or was it original?
The tear-drop hardware on the top drawers are original to the dresser and the glass knobs on the bottom are from Hobby Lobby.
Ok ā no judging ā Iām doing this without my glasses on?[LoL] . . . I [think] the 3 Colors NOT included are ;
⢠āPebble Beachā
⢠āRaw Linenā
⢠āProvenceā
Either Iām not as blind as I think I am ā or ā Iām going to be way off base HA!
Oh my, myā¦.the beautiful things I could do with crushed sage & Emma. Thanks for the tip with the bondo. Hadnāt thought of that, and I have a table corner that a dog tried to eat. The table is currently stained, and I wish I could keep it that way because I love the color. But, the table was given to me, and I have no idea what color the stain is. Now that I have an idea on how to fix the chewed corner, I may give your dry & wash paint technique a try. Thanks for another beautiful project!
Aloha, I love Parisian Charm!
Wow-love the soft look! And I love that you can see the woodgrain. Awesome transformation. I really like all the paint colors but Provence would be my first pick. Call it my current mode š
Love them all, but I think my favorite is Raw Linen!
Crushed sage
I love the color Beach Glass
Tuscan Teal
Iād have a tough time deciding between Nantucket and Driftwood⦠gorgeous colours. ?
